In the US and most of Europe there's a tradition of suppressing the supernatural stemming back to the Enlightenment - when society in general essentially staged a massive crusade/cover-up where they attempted to hunt "monsters" into extinction and disseminate the idea that none of it was "real", and that these entities only existed in stories.
